Reporting to the Deputy Director and Chief Curator, the Head of Publications develops and implements the strategic direction of the YCBA’s publications program, foregrounding scholarship and research on the museum’s collections, exhibitions, and architecture. Working with staff across the museum and with authors around the globe, the Head of Publications will produce innovative titles and publishing initiatives to advance the YCBA’s profile and contributions to the field of British art.
The role combines strategic planning of the overall publishing program with editorial responsibility for the development of individual titles. The position works closely with YCBA’s Head of Design, who oversees book design, production, and printing. Scholarly rigor, impeccable editorial and writing skills, and a strong understanding of art history and museum publishing are essential. Familiarity with British art is welcome but not required. The Head of Publications maintains a strong working partnership with Yale University Press for distribution, marketing, and sales.
This position will have the immediate opportunity to hire a development editor.
Key responsibilities include:

- Sets and implements the strategic direction and development of the YCBA’s publishing program across printed and digital formats.
- Develops content strategy and oversees long-range publications schedule in close partnership with the Director and the Deputy Director and Chief Curator.
- Leads the development and assessment of new titles.
- Works collaboratively across the YCBA’s departments (particularly Curatorial, Design, Communications, Advancement, and Education).
- Ensures highest editorial and scholarly standards.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in related field and 7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Proven direct ability in publishing programs and strong project management skills.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Exceptional writing and editing skills; detailed-oriented working methods; knowledge of and experience with scholarly editorial protocols.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Highly effective communication and collaboration skills; ability to manage but also work collaboratively with authors, artists, designers, editors, and publishers.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Broad-ranging knowledge of museum publishing.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:
MA preferred, in English, art history, or related field. Knowledge of British art preferred. Five years of experience as editor/publisher in an art museum or other cultural institution. Strong working knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style. Experience reviewing graphic design and typography in layout. Experience in online publishing.
