The Anderson Collection at Stanford University is an extraordinary collection of modern and contemporary American paintings and sculpture. The museum was established by a generous gift of 121 works from the private collection of Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson and Mary Patricia Anderson Pence, from one of the world’s most outstanding private assemblies of art built by the family over the past 50 years. The collection has expanded with gifts of paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Highlights include works by Helen Frankenthaler, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, and Willem De Kooning.
The Visitor Experience and Volunteer Associate advises and supports the volunteers that work with the Anderson Collection. This vital role instills in each volunteer an excitement about our mission and goals, and serves as a welcoming presence to all visitors, both at the front desk and in the galleries. Additionally, this role is responsible for conducting opening and closing procedures of the museum, as well as managing the visitor experience, volunteers and docents, and the scheduling and administrative tasks associated with both. These responsibilities include but are not limited to, scheduling front-line volunteers to ensure appropriate staffing levels; manage, motivate and evaluate the performance and operational standards of the volunteers; retain volunteer pool; manage Visitor Experience staff; catalog and other sales; and assist with programs as needed.
This position reports to the Director of Programming and Engagement and is considered part-time at 80% FTE and will be scheduled to work 32 hours/week, including Saturdays.
In this role, you will:
- Open and close museum during public hours
- Collaborate on volunteer trainings to be held throughout the year
- Onboard and train new volunteers
- Ensure volunteer programs are following best practices in the field of museums and look for places of improvement
- Maintain a consistent and positive visitor experience at the Anderson
- Work closely with colleagues from other institutions on campus
- Act on behalf of the supervisor, department manager, or chair in regards to establishing priorities and identifying and resolving problems that are administrative in nature.
- Oversee and/or perform duties associated with scheduling, organizing, and operating complex conferences, seminars, and events, including arranging with vendors for services, overseeing the production and distribution of materials, administering logistics, and managing events within budget.
- Compose and draft documents and correspondence for presentations, course handouts, grants, conferences, seminars, and reports; perform substantial editing and fact checking. Create, maintain, modify, and/or ensure accuracy of content in various unit documents, displays, reports, brochures, social media, and/or websites.
- Plan and schedule calendar(s) with limited consultation, resolve calendaring conflicts, and arrange travel in compliance with unit, university, and sponsor policies.
- Create complex reports and spreadsheets which may utilize specialized software and systems.
- Oversee and/or process a variety of complex financial transactions; produce, monitor, and reconcile budget statements; research, identify, and resolve discrepancies. May assist with capital or special equipment requests and/or vendor selection.
- Coordinate and monitor routine maintenance services completion. Plan and coordinate office moves and/or minor renovation projects.
- May lead staff or supervise day-to-day work of volunteers, student and/or temporary workers, including scheduling, assigning, and prioritizing workloads, setting appropriate deadlines, reviewing work for quality and timeliness, and providing performance review input.
Please note that this position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered hybrid with 3 to 4 days onsite each week, including Saturdays.

The expected pay range for this position is $66,000-$79,000 per annum. The actual pay will be prorated based on the 80% FTE. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
