About the College, School, or Department
The Johnson Museum’s permanent collection numbers 40,000 works, spanning six millennia and encompassing art from most world cultures. Among the strengths of the collection are the holdings of Asian art; more than 23,000 prints, drawings, and photographs ranging from the fifteenth century to the present; modern and contemporary painting and sculpture; European art from ancient times to the present; African sculpture and textiles; and pre-Columbian sculpture and ceramics. Each year, the Johnson Museum holds major exhibitions and programs that present new scholarship and fresh perspectives on the works in our collection or on temporary loan. Many of these exhibitions are inspired by the Cornell curriculum and are the product of partnerships with faculty, graduate students, other museums, research centers, scholars, cultural practitioners, and source communities.
The Museum enhances and supports faculty teaching across Cornell’s schools and departments by hosting approximately 350 class sessions per academic year in the Museum’s galleries and classrooms. Educational outreach programs for the regional community are core to Cornell University’s land-grant commitment to public engagement. We serve over 6,000 schoolchildren from schools in a 90-mile radius of Ithaca and offer professional development trainings for regional teachers, many of whom teach in rural areas and for whom the Museum promotes intercultural understanding and global awareness. Admission is free for all visitors.
The Opportunity
We seek a Coordinator of Student Engagement and Public Programs who will involve Cornell students directly in fulfilling the Museum’s role as a cultural gateway between campus and community through three primary efforts.
As the Johnson Museum’s Coordinator of Student Engagement and Public Programs, you will:
- Ignite creative programming by collaborating with our Director of Education to create a captivating array of public programs for adults. From enthralling public lectures to mesmerizing musical performances, thought-provoking film screenings to inspiring poetry readings, and so much more, you will be at the forefront of crafting experiences that resonate with our community.
These programs will draw inspiration from our rich collections, dynamic exhibitions, and vibrant partnerships within the Cornell community and beyond. We’re seeking someone with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage the intricate details of collaborative and coordinating efforts required to turn ideas into reality. With precise planning and a keen eye for detail, you’ll craft experiences that not only enrich our visitors’ lives but also forge deeper connections with our institution.
Most importantly, you’ll work effectively to expand inclusivity and diversity in our programming. By fostering collaborations with BIPOC scholars, artists, and activists, you’ll help us celebrate marginalized identities, ensuring our museum is a welcoming space for all.
- Empower student innovation by fostering our museum as a hub for intellectual and artistic exploration by collaborating with student groups across campus. Together, we’ll explore experimental approaches to programming, inspiring new ideas and providing a platform for students to showcase their talents.
Encourage wellness and personal growth by facilitating student performances and interactions with the community. This role gives you the unique opportunity to be a catalyst for creativity and self-expression on our campus.
- Nurture future leaders as a mentor and leader. You’ll oversee the training and management of our team of student interns. These interns will be the face of our museum, delivering high-quality gallery and exhibition tours to various groups, including the public, alumni, and underserved community members.
Your guidance will shape these interns into dynamic advocates for our institution, sharing their passion for art and culture with a diverse range of visitors.
Core hours for this position are Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM with some flexibility on start and end times, mutually agreed upon between you and your supervisor.
Flexibility for coverage of evening and weekend events is required. You will work with your supervisor to pre-arrange your schedule adjusting, based on event coverage needs.
Details regarding the possibility of performing some work remotely will be pre-arranged and mutually agreed upon between you and your supervisor once team and department needs are met.

What We Need
- A cover letter and resume outlining your interest and how your experience and goals align with the potential for mutual success in the role are required for consideration.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent in art history, museum studies, art, or related field and at least 4 years or more experience working closely with students and student groups and developing programs in a museum/cultural/higher education institution, or equivalent combination.
- Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to work on multiple projects independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it’s OK if you don’t.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Experience with promoting events and opportunities.
