Position Summary and Qualifications:

The Frances M. Maguire Art Museum (FMAM) at Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) seeks an experienced, creative, and forward-thinking museum educator to conceive and implement educational and community engagement programs. The Education and Community Engagement Coordinator will serve as the principal liaison for the museum to K-12 educators and students, schools, community partners, and families in the greater Philadelphia region. The Education and Community Engagement Coordinator will cultivate collaborative relationships between the museum and various community groups to create a dynamic range of curricular and co-curricular opportunities using innovative teaching strategies and interpretive tools to deepen cultural competence. In collaboration with the Director, Associate Director and the Assistant Curator, the Education and Community Engagement Coordinator will support interdisciplinary relationships across Saint Joseph’s University to promote student and faculty engagement.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Develop and implement educational programming related to the Museum’s exhibitions, permanent collection, and mission using a wide variety of delivery methods that serve the University and the museum’s surrounding communities. These include, but are not limited to, guided school and group tours, virtual field trips and programs, family days, summer camps, and online educational content

Work closely with other museum staff to create educational information and materials, to support and enhance exhibitions of the permanent collection and loan shows, as well as special events

Build strong relationships between the museum with SJU, community, and regional educational representatives and organizations

Identify and cultivate external program partners and audiences

Recruit, train, coordinate, and supervise student employees

Identify grant opportunities and contribute to the development of narratives and budgets for grant applications to federal, state, and private funding sources for support of the museum’s educational programs

Determine and implement new tools and technology for audience education and engagement

Secondary Duties & Responsibilities:

Assist as needed with exhibitions, installations, and programs led by other museum staff

Determine and facilitate as needed cost effective methods of advertising educational programming and events to external communities

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in museum studies, education, art history, art, or closely related field

Minimum of two years professional experience in the classroom and/or museums or other experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified

Demonstrated experience in creating, planning, organizing, coordinating and implementing diverse educational programs at the pre-K-12 level in museum or other formal or informal learning contexts

Strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills

Superior organizational skills, with a demonstrated record of success meeting deadlines, and developing, implementing and evaluating short and long-range goals

Ability to problem-solve creatively and effectively

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Proven competency working with the public and diverse communities

Preferred:

Master’s degree, preferably in museum studies, education, art history, art, or closely related field

Three years or more professional experience in the classroom and/or museums or other experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified

Familiarity with national, state, and local standards at the K-12 level

Knowledge of and experience with museum principles, objectives, and practices

Experience developing project budgets and projections 

Experience researching and writing content for grants

Experience in recruiting, training, supervising, and motivating student employees and volunteers within the area of specialty.

Experience with Adobe and Microsoft Suite, internet and social media experience

Fluency in Spanish

Physical Requirements &/or Unusual Work Hours:

Some early morning or evening hours 

Some weekend hours 

Moderate physical activity; requires standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, occasional lifting

No or very limited exposure to physical risk

Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment
