The Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia invites applications for a visionary Gallery Director to begin January 2025. This position is crucial to the artistic and educational mission of the School, overseeing the curation, programming, and installation of 5 exhibition spaces within in our 50,000-square-foot Main Art Building, as well as the newly established, 5,000-square-foot Athenaeum, opened in 2021. Located in vibrant downtown Athens, the Athenaeum is a dynamic space that includes an art gallery, classroom facilities, and reading room.
The Gallery Director position presents a unique opportunity to shape and contribute to the School of Art, home to more than 800 majors and minors, 40+ faculty in art, design, art history, and art education, and approximately 60 graduate students. Reporting to the School’s Director, this position is expected to build upon the recent successes of the Dodd Galleries, curating exhibitions by major contemporary artists as well as commissioning projects by mid-career and emerging artists. The Gallery Director is responsible for developing exhibitions and related programming, as well as managing administrative processes related to the galleries, including the coordination of loans, shipping, and insurance, as needed. Exhibitions and related programs are core features of the School of Art and are vital to the success of our academic mission, as well as our partnerships with other units on campus and within the larger artistic community.
The Gallery Director is encouraged to travel several times a year to attend art fairs, conduct studio visits, and meet with key stakeholders for the purpose of cultivating relationships with artists and raising the profile of the gallery. In partnership with the Art School’s Advisory Board, the Gallery Director will also lead the effort to develop new sources of funding and revenue. This position is responsible for seeking grants/fundraising in support of gallery projects. Additionally, the Gallery Director is responsible for coordinating with the Communications Director on gallery announcements, press releases, and accompanying signage. The Gallery Director will hire and work with a team of students and contract preparators to promote exhibitions, staff the galleries, run the website, install exhibitions, and manage programming connected to the galleries’ exhibitions.
Curators, artists, and scholars with relevant experience are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, creativity, and expertise in the evolving field of contemporary art. Degree requirements include an MA in Curatorial Studies, an MFA in studio art, or a PhD in art history, or other, related fields. The Gallery Director is not required to pursue a research agenda, but will be expected to maintain expertise in contemporary art and curatorial practice. The Gallery Director teaches up to two courses per year as assigned by the Director and serves on the School of Art’s Visiting Artist and Scholar Series Committee. The rank of the position is Academic Professional; the position is a year-round, 12-month appointment.
