JOB SUMMARY:
This is a professional position and is primarily responsible for the care, management, and interpretation of Clemson Department of Historic Properties’ artifact collections, researching collections provenance, developing and executing collections management policies, and developing new physical and digital exhibits at Fort Hill National Landmark, Hopewell House, and Hanover House, and the future Clemson History Museum and Interpretive Center. Under the supervision of the Director, this position coordinates with all Historic Properties Staff and students to lead exhibit development and related curatorial activities. Other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
40% – Essential – Collections Management:
Under the supervision of the Director, acts as the primary point of contact for all aspects of Historic Properties artifact collections. Manages and maintains proper storage environments, procedures, and conditions for all objects in the artifact collections located across all historic properties, while adhering to professional standards. This includes objects on display and in storage. Manage and maintains intellectual control over all collections documentation files, including but not limited to collection management policies, object research, loans, condition assessments, cataloging, deaccessions, and emergency response plans. Responsible for updating and tracking artifacts in museum’s content management system. Performs preventative conservation and makes recommendations for remedial conservation when needed. Coordinates with conservators and tracks progress.
40% – Essential – Exhibition Curation:
Research, plans, and executes physical and digital exhibits for all historic properties under the direction of the Director. This includes researching thematic topics, writing label copy, artifact selection, mount making, exhibit design and layout, as well as supervising and/or assisting in exhibit installation. Oversees the routine maintenance of physical exhibits and recommends necessary repairs. Collaborates with other University departments (i.e. Clemson Archives and Special Collections) on rotating or temporary exhibits when necessary. Responsible for managing and administering all curatorial housekeeping and keeps displays in good order. Maintains all records related to exhibitions.
10% – Essential – Education and Outreach:
Supervises and directs student and interns assisting with collections care, record keeping, curatorial housekeeping, and cataloging. Meets with stakeholders and community partners to garner support and work collaboratively to develop and facilitate short-term displays and long-term installations. Aides in administering community and engagement programs, including special events and fundraisers. Provides information to the public regarding collections and museum artifacts. Respond to research inquiries.
5% – Essential – Fiscal Management:
With the Director of Historic Properties, researches, writes, and administers grants that aide in collections areas. Develops, maintains, and administers the budget for collections and exhibit needs.
5% – Essential – Professional Development:
Networks, confers, and coordinates with fellow professionals in the museum field, public history, and related academic museums and galleries. Identifies and attends regular professional development opportunities to stay abreast of best practices and trends within public history and the museum profession. Ensure that excellence and accuracy are maintained across all forms of interpretation, programming, and media.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education – 1st Bachelor’s Degree – Bachelor’s degree in Public History, history, museum studies, anthropology, or related field with an emphasis in American history, South Carolina history and/or history of the American South.
Work Exp 3+ years – Museum related experience with registration, collections management, exhibit development, or working in a museum environment. Working knowledge of collections management software.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Education – 1st Master’s Degree – history, public history, museum studies, MLIS, art history or related field.
Work Exp 5+ years – Managing artifact collections, research & writing, exhibit curation, extensive knowledge of AAM’s best practices, ability to work collaboratively and with a high degree of self direction, project management

COMPENSATION INFORMATION
Expected Salary Range $38,985 – $50,000
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson’s compensation guidelines.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL
Normal Operations
Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
