The Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) is pleased to announce the Samuel H. Kress Foundation Provenance Research Fellowship (AAMD/Kress Fellowship). The fellowship, in its second year, provides essential funding for a researcher to investigate a permanent collection, or part of a collection, of an AAMD Museum, making it possible for the museum to take a more comprehensive approach to conducting in-depth research and delving into the full provenance, ownership, and exhibition histories of works from the collection.
The 2016–2017 fellowship is a year-long program, three months of which will be spent with the collection to be researched and nine months to be spent in Boston. There the fellow will have two renowned researchers as mentors and access to research facilities of the Boston area, including resources at the Museum of Fine Arts and the Harvard Art Museums. Victoria Reed, Curator for Provenance at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Sarah Kianovsky, Curator of the Collection, Division of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Harvard Art Museums will act as mentors to the AAMD/Kress fellow.
The fellowship will include a $30,000 stipend, which may need to be supplemented by the home museum, and $5,000 travel assistance to cover expenses. All Kress monies will be administered through AAMD to the successful museum.
The fellowship is open to all AAMD members with an institutional operating budget of $3 million to $15 million. Museums that fit the budget category will submit an application that will include detailed information on the works to be researched and the background of a candidate to do provenance research on the collection.
The fellowship reflects AAMD’s on-going commitment to fostering professional development in the art museum field.
Applications are due by March 31, 2016 and can be found here.
The fellowship will begin September 6, 2016.
