TRAVELING EXHIBITION: F A B R I C a t i o n

FABRICation features the work of 7 artists (Erin Castellan, Kristy Deetz, Virginia Derryberry, Reni Gower, Rachel Hayes, Susan Iverson, and Natalie Smith) that incorporate a textile sensibility through elements of fabric and fabrication.  Inspired by a rich array of historical textiles (drapery to quilt), these complex multi-part constructions are encoded by traditional handicraft to contrast our culture’s rampant media consumption with the redemptive nuance of slow work wrought by hand.  Saturated with vibrant color, the luminous materiality activates the senses and counters passive visual skimming.  Works range from delicate illusions to layered constructions to architectural interventions.  Mixed media includes oil and acrylic paint, vintage clothing, aluminum screens, wool, silk, plastic, thread, vinyl, burlap, rug-hold, glass, recycled objects, and found fabrics.  Whether painting, tapestry or construct, these works interweave sensory pleasure with repetitive process to invoke introspection and reflection.

Independent artist Erin Castellan lives and works in Asheville, NC. By combining found, fabricated, and painted materials, Castellan creates hybrid works that drape off the wall.  Idiosyncratic combinations and detailed handwork encourage a slower more contemplative viewing experience.

Professor in the Art Discipline at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Kristy Deetz paints magical illusions that place veils of wrinkled fabric against areas of faux wood grain.  With references to Renaissance and Minimalist painting, her work rests in the crease between representation and abstraction.

Inspired by the rich history of crazy quilts, Virginia Derryberry’s Janus Series, explores pivotal moments in her life through time-honored narrative quilting and traditional needle crafts such as trapunto, embroidery, and appliqué.  Professor Derryberry recently retired from the Art Department at the University of North Carolina Asheville.

Professor in the Painting and Printmaking Department at Virginia Commonwealth University, Reni Gower works within a painterly collage tradition.  By incorporating repetitive process and fluid improvisation, she creates complex illusions that entwine pattern and gestural abstraction. Her multilayered mixed media works encourage reflection and retrospection.

Independent artist, Rachel Hayes recently moved to Tulsa, OK.  Embracing the grid, Hayes machine sews varied materials into shimmering curtain-like quilts of transparent, opaque, and reflective color.    Her luminous architectural interventions are experiential explorations of space.

Professor Susan Iverson recently retired from the Craft/Material Studies Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. Citing the rich history of traditional hand loom strip weaving, Iverson’s stunning hand woven tapestry forms echo her life on a secluded woodland pond as it unfolds over time.

Independent artist Natalie Smith lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.  Using the activities of choosing, collecting, organizing, and arranging, Smith invents minimal multi-part works.  By merging the physicality of materials with the rationality of design she transforms the intangible into concrete arrays of shape, pattern, and color.
