The Sheldon Museum of Art seeks an Assistant Curator of Education to work collaboratively as part of the museum’s Education Department in developing innovative pedagogical and philosophical approaches to teaching from original works of art for diverse audiences. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching, preparing multimodal curriculum and learning activities, supporting outreach and student engagement, collecting data, and supporting general administration of the department. Primarily responsible for managing Sheldon’s K-12 education and outreach programs, the Assistant Curator of Education coordinates the long-standing Lincoln Public Schools (LPS)/Volunteer Docent program, inclusive of recruitment, training, evaluation, and liaising with LPS stakeholders. Reporting to the Curator of Academic Programs, this position also supports all facets of Sheldon’s education initiatives in accordance with the museum’s mission.
Sheldon Museum of Art’s landmark 1963 Philip Johnson-designed building houses the collections of the Sheldon Art Association, founded in 1888, and the University of Nebraska. Together the collections comprise more than 12,000 works of art in diverse media with prominent holdings of 19th-century landscape and still life, American Impressionism, early Modernism, geometric abstraction, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, photography, and contemporary art. More than thirty of Sheldon’s monumental sculptures are exhibited throughout the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s City and East Campuses, including major works by Gaston Lachaise, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Richard Serra, Jesus Moroles, Yinka Shonibare, Michael Heizer, Roxy Paine, and Mark di Suvero. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, chartered in 1869, is one of the nation’s leading teaching institutions, and is recognized internationally for a wide array of research projects aimed at broadening knowledge in the sciences and humanities. In 1972, Sheldon Museum of Art was among the earliest institutions to receive accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, and it was most recently reaccredited in 2012.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education, art history, or related field with one (1) year of experience in a museum or equivalent institutional experience in curatorial or educational capacity (inclusive of internships). Exceptional organizational, event, and project management skills with the ability to nimbly prioritize and execute short-term and long-term projects. Ability to manage and inspire multigenerational volunteers. Familiarity with modern and contemporary art as well as with current museum policies and practices, critical pedagogy, and multicultural education. Excellent writing and communication skills—including public speaking—for multiple audiences.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in education, art history, or museum studies with emphasis on museum education with two (2) years of museum or institutional experience in curatorial or educational capacity. Demonstrated experience with curriculum development, preparing lesson plans, and evaluating student learning. Familiarity with modern and contemporary art, strategies and tools for online engagement, and the use of technology for interpretation and learning.
