The Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA)*, the private fundraising and alumni relations organization for the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is seeking an experienced Director of Development to lead the planning and management of the Chazen Museum of Art’s fundraising enterprise, particularly focusing on implementing its major gifts program. While employed by WFAA and reporting to an Associate Vice President and Managing Director at WFAA, the Director of Development will work closely with and travel alongside the Director of the Chazen, coordinating efforts with Chazen and WFAA staff as appropriate.
The Chazen Museum of Art consists of two adjoined buildings on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison housing over 175,000 square foot of space. The majority of space is dedicated to the display of UW’s permanent collection, ranging from ancient art to 20th-century European and American Modernism to 21st-century internationalism, with niche galleries that focus on subcollections like Native American baskets; Japanese, American, and British ceramics, Lalique glass; and medallic art. With a belief that the visual arts enrich the individual human experience and because knowledge of art is essential to understanding diverse cultures, past and present, the Chazen is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of works of art, as well as presenting related educational programs in support of the teaching, research, and public mission of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The successful candidate will join WFAA and the Chazen Museum of Art at a crucial moment in the museum’s history. The museum will soon be celebrating its 50th anniversary, and additionally, has just experienced a leadership transition with the retirement of a long-time director. This Director of Development position is newly created and presents an enormous opportunity for institutional and professional growth at this exciting time.
The Director of Development will work collaboratively to accomplish the following objectives:
- Work with the leadership of the Chazen and WFAA to identify priorities and design, implement, and manage strategic plans for a comprehensive development program.
- Self-direct prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and management of a portfolio of potential and current donors, with a focus on leadership annual and major gifts that advance the Chazen’s strategic priorities.
- Plan and conduct visits and other ongoing contacts that link potential donors with the Chazen’s programs and development needs.
- Develop and maintain strategies to enhance donor stewardship.
- Practice effective and consistent internal and external communications.
- Effectively navigate relationships with and between the Chazen, WFAA, other UW-Madison programs, and the Madison community.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree; master’s degree in marketing, communication, non-profit management or business preferred
- Interest in or experience with arts oriented institution or museum background preferred
- 2 or more years of fund development experience, with focus on major gifts
- Appreciation of the role played by the Chazen Museum of Art and the University of Wisconsin, and an interest in promoting its programs
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Self-directed, team player who has a strong, results-oriented, work ethic
- Willingness and ability to meet travel requirements (approx. 25%)
Final appointment will be made at the Associate Director, Director or Senior Director level depending on experience and qualifications. This is a full-time position involving travel. We offer a competitive salary and an excellent benefits program. Current WFAA Directors of Development at any level are eligible to transfer laterally, maintaining their current job title and salary.
