Reports To: Dean of the College
Job Summary/Objective: The incumbent will ensure effective day-to-day operations and plan exhibits/exhibitions of the Pannell Gallery, Benedict Gallery, Babcock Gallery and Sweet Briar Museum. He/she will teach three courses a year in their academic specialty to support our offerings in Visual Studies, which includes Art History and Studio Art.
Position Type/Expected Work Hours: As faculty, hours will vary per teaching schedule and other duties; staff responsibilities will include early evening gallery openings and occasional weekend events.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the maintenance and conservatorship of the Gallery collection and archives, and updating the associated EmbARK database;
- Advise the College when outside conservation and or other research is required.
- Direct and manage the Living with Arts Initiative, a presidential initiative that places significant pieces of art in student living spaces;
- Represent the Galleries and Museums with the SBC Friends of Art Board and meetings;
- Manage the reception of visitors, guests, faculty and students in the museum and galleries;
- Supervise student workers;
- Collaborate with the directors of the Center for Creativity and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and other local cultural organizations; and,
- Teach three courses per year.
Required Qualifications:
- The successful applicant will hold a M.A., and preferably a Ph.D., in art history, museum studies, or arts management;
- Teaching experience at the college level is desirable;
- Preference for a background in contemporary (19th – 21st century) material culture;
- Candidate should excel in curating and researching exhibitions;
- Research agenda that complements and enriches SBC’s collections, including our small outdoor sculpture collection; and
- Five to seven years of gallery and/or museum operations experience.
