Job Summary/Basic Function: | Wheaton College, a leading liberal arts institution located in Norton, Massachusetts, seeks a Director for its Beard and Weil Galleries.
Reporting to the Provost or Associate Provost, the Director will be responsible for shaping a strategic vision for exhibitions and educational programming that support the College’s core mission, and a broad mission of public engagement intended to expand the impact and visibility of the gallery, its exhibitions, and collection within and beyond the campus community, and to enhance its regional and national reputation. This is a part-time, 10-month position, which follows the academic year from September to June. The Director of the Beard and Weil Galleries must be a passionate spokesperson and “connector” for the College who will work collaboratively and consultatively with arts faculty, the Arts Manager, and the Curator of the Permanent Collection. The Director will also work with students, including opportunities to teach when available, and foster opportunities for interdisciplinary exhibitions in various departments. The Director will further shape the artistic direction of the galleries by bringing forward the work of emerging young artists, new media, and a more global range of artists working on socially and politically relevant themes. Responsible for the research and development of collections-based and loan exhibitions, the Director will produce at least three exhibitions per year, including Wheaton Biennials. The Director is responsible for planning and implementing all aspects of exhibitions including curating and working with guest curators, attendance at all openings of the gallery, budgeting, shipping and handling, registration, installation, insurance, assisting with fundraising/donor development, especially the Friends of Art, supervision of student gallery monitors, publicity in conjunction with the Office of Marketing and Communications, responding to weather-related operations issues, and maintaining a presence on campus of 20 hours per week. |
Minimum Qualifications: | The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion and be able to contribute to dynamic arts departments and programming by providing innovative approaches to collaboration, community engagement, and technology. A comprehensive and demonstrated knowledge of contemporary art and theory is expected.
Additionally, the ideal candidate will: Interested applicants should provide a cover letter, resume, contact information for three references, a brief “Gallery Philosophy Statement” addressing the role of the gallery in a liberal arts educational environment, and visual materials featuring the work of two projects via media link. |
Preferred Qualifications: | • Three years of museum or college gallery experience. • Evidence of teaching and working with students at the college level. • Evidence of working collaboratively within an academic environment. • Evidence of professional knowledge of preservation issues, collection management, and maintenance. • Evidence of grant-writing and fundraising experience. • Experience in serving as a liaison with regional arts organizations and identifying and generating partnerships between art and diverse disciplines. |
