The Academic Collaboration + Engagement Coordinator will play a vital role in the cultivation of a programmatic approach that prioritizes collaboration and reciprocal partnerships with the campus community including faculty, staff, students, and community-based campus partners. This new position will focus on creating events and educational experiences that align with our primary function as an academic museum devoted to fostering collaborations with faculty and students of all ages in support of learning.

Working under the direction of the Director of Education, the ideal candidate will establish a range of museum program experiences designed to position the MSU Broad as an educational platform that supports creativity and risk-taking, curricular innovation, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and civic and cultural engagement. The successful candidate will possess a deep commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and collaboration, bringing the arts into active conversation with other ways of understanding.

An integral part of Michigan State University, the MSU Broad supports the teaching, research, and outreach missions of the university through active engagement with ideas, artworks, and exhibitions. As the university launches a campus-wide arts strategy, this moment represents a unique opportunity to join the education team in positioning the museum as a space that is relevant and responsive. This new museum educator will be responsible for articulating a vision for transforming engagement into active partnership where audiences have agency, and for implementing programming that is co-created with curators, educators, and the university community.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In collaboration with campus partners, establish a cross-disciplinary vision for museum program experiences that utilize the academic resources available at Michigan State University.
  • Design public programs that engage and enrich students, visitors, and the campus community. Support the museum in cultivating learning encounters through dialogue with art, asking challenging questions and testing new ideas.
  • Generate platforms for collaborative, cross-disciplinary engagement centered in scholarship and inquiry. Plan public programs in partnership with faculty, staff, students, and community-based campus partners.
  • Serve as a primary liaison between the museum and university community, cultivating academic exchange across campus in a variety of disciplines. Establish relevant and reciprocal partnerships with the campus and community that aid the museum in building audiences, diversifying our reach, and ensuring access for learners of all ages.
  • Help design and contribute to interdisciplinary learning and research-driven programs designed to further the university’s mission of developing globally engaged citizen leaders.
  • Develop an annual outreach plan that identifies and fosters key relationships with MSU departments, individuals, and specialists from other universities and museums, as well as local community groups.
  • Teach and lecture in a wide variety of contexts; working alongside faculty and students to advance scholarly and educational engagement with exhibitions at the museum. Promote knowledge of the museum and its programs through writing, teaching, and public speaking.
  • Assume responsibility for on-time, on-budget, high-quality programming that satisfies the needs of both the visitor and the museum. Communicate and collaborate with the appropriate museum staff including Curatorial, Public Relations, Development, and Operations.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness, maintain statistics and attendance tracking, and prepare monthly/annual reports that address measurable impact.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the local, state, and national art and museum education community, including attending conferences and presenting on innovative programs and initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with the MSU Broad Education Team to offer general education and museum event support as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS                                                                                                                             

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral or master’s degree in humanities field with research that relates to areas such as art, art history, art education, museum studies
  • Experience teaching at the university level as a graduate assistant or faculty of record
  • Demonstrate knowledge of art and art history
  • Broad understanding of the field of art history, including a range of periods, cultures, and artistic trends and willingness to research outside of their area of expertise

The successful candidate will possess:

  • demonstrated creativity and innovation in developing programs engaging a broad public, and an academic community in particular with project management experience
  • experience in long-range planning of projects and programs, from conception through implementation, with attention to operational details
  • demonstrated ability to speak to small and large groups
  • ability to do group facilitation
  • experience with grant writing on the local and national level
