The College of the Arts at Columbus State University invites applications for the position of Director of the Bo Bartlett Center. This is a 12-month administrative appointment reporting directly to the Dean of the College of the Arts.
This position is responsible for the fiscal and physical planning, operation, and promotion of the Columbus State University’s Bo Bartlett Center and its exhibitions, programs, and events; for the care, maintenance, and management of the collection of art and artifacts housed in the Bo Bartlett Center (BBC), coordination of outreach activities with local schools, agencies, and community groups; and coordination of outside exhibits and visiting artists. As this is an outward facing, community-engaged position, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to equitable and inclusive outreach and exhibition programming.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: reporting to the Dean of the College of the Arts and working collaboratively with the Chair of the Art Department, Art Department faculty, and interface with the Bo Bartlett Center Advisory Board; overseeing the daily operations and strategic direction of the BBC and attend to routine gallery maintenance; collaborating with the Office of Development as well as University and departmental administration on fund raising and development; writing grant proposals; initiating and maintaining relationships with sponsors, donors, and the arts community at the local, state, national, and international levels; providing effective and communicative management of staff, docents, and volunteers; engaging in and supporting outreach and public service efforts for the BBC; engaging undergraduate and graduate students in art education outreach activities with local schools, agencies, and community groups; working closely with University faculty to develop programming in alignment with the curriculum and engaging undergraduate and graduate students with the collections and exhibits; teaching up to one course per fall and spring semesters as needed in areas such as Arts Administration, Curatorial Practice, and American Art History, etc.; developing community based interdisciplinary programs in the BBC for all ages to create an interactive and engaging environment; curating rotating exhibitions featuring the work of Bo Bartlett as well as planning visiting artists’ exhibitions from an inclusive range of established and emerging, contemporary artists; developing, planning, and coordinating a visiting artist program in concert with the Director of Illges Gallery; curating group shows and theme-based shows in the visiting artists’ galleries; negotiating and contracting with artists, gallerists, and/or artist representatives to develop exhibition content; contracting with art handlers and managing the shipment of works; supervising the preparation of work for installation; installing work and setting lighting;
Writing original texts for curator’s statements, press releases, and other promotional materials; developing and disseminating promotional material; overseeing and supervising regular updating of the gallery web site to ensure active engagement; creating and implementing social media, marketing collateral, newsletters, and PR in collaboration with national arts postings, blogs, and relevant publications as well as the Columbus Visitor´s Bureau; working with the Bo Bartlett Center Advisory Board to advance the mission and vision of the BBC; planning and assisting with implementation, along with a volunteer committee, an annual fundraising gala; maintaining records for the BBC and inventory for the Permanent Collection; determining and implementing best practices in the archival care of items in the Permanent Collection; supervising the processing of new acquisitions; and supervising the management of the operating budget for the BBC; maintaining accurate records of expense and generating fiscal reports.
Minimum qualifications include a Terminal degree in Fine Arts, Museum Studies, Curatorial Practice, Art Theory and Criticism, or a related field; prior experience as an art museum or university art gallery director or curator; have extensive knowledge of American and Contemporary art; knowledge of contemporary artist practice; knowledge of the presentation, care, and professional handling of works of art; skills in exhibition design and installation; process the ability to develop, articulate, and implement a shared strategic vision and plan; have the ability to guide and empower a dynamic and creative team; demonstrate the ability to manage budgets; keep accurate records; and work within a deadline-driven environment; work independently and troubleshoot problems with minimal supervision; work effectively with diverse constituencies of students, staff, faculty, advisory board members, and community members; demonstrate a commitment to fostering a welcoming and productive environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors; possess strong communication, collaboration, organizational, time management, website, and computer skills, to include a demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; a demonstrated ability to use technology and digital media in promoting an institution, reaching audiences, and creating innovative and engaging exhibitions and programs; and the ability to work evenings, weekends, and overnight travel as required.
