Status: Full-time (40 hours/week, 12 months)

Pay Range: $40,000-45,000

General Summary

Southern Utah Museum of Art, on the campus of Southern Utah University, features the artwork of regional artists known for their landscapes, faculty and student artists from the SUU Department of Art & Design, as well as emerging and distinguished artists from around the country. Strengths of the nearly 2,000-object permanent collection include the body of work by Jimmie F. Jones that exemplifies his notable career in the region, as well as a robust collection of prints featuring well-known artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Salvador Dal, Katsushika Hokusai, Thomas Hart Benton, and others. Since 2019, a number of gifts and acquisitions have focused on photography such as Brett Weston, Gary Edward Adams, and a portfolio called DE | MARCATION: A Survey of Contemporary Photography in Utah. Named the best-designed museum in Utah by Architectural Digest, SUMA’s building was designed by Brooks + Scarpa and inspired by the region’s famed slot canyons.

Under the direction of the Executive Director, and as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Assistant Director is responsible for the efficient, effective, and productive management of the institution’s facilities and interdepartmental initiatives. This new position will oversee the daily operations as they relate to the following areas: Administration, Visitor Services, Facilities & Rentals, SUMA Events Calendar, Interns & Volunteers, and Retail.

The Associate Director is expected to maintain an appropriately high standard of professionalism directly and through subordinates; and will work collegially and cooperatively with other members of the Senior Leadership Team, permanent staff, student staff, and others.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Administration
    1. Post and interview for open positions in all SUMA departments
    1. Manage electronic hiring procedures
    1. Oversee work study requests, hiring, and tracking
    1. Communicate with staff on housekeeping and other administrative items
    1. Oversee museum-wide onboarding procedures in conjunction with members of the Senior Leadership Team
    1. Organize staff meetings and retreats
    1. Understand SUU policies and required staff training through the university 
    1. Serve as the data protection officer for SUMA
    1. Oversee project management for grants in conjunction with the SUU Office of Advancement and the Sponsored Programs, Agreements, Research, & Contracts (SPARC) Office
  2. Visitor Services
    1. Be familiar with all front desk operations
    1. Run bi-weekly or monthly meetings with Museum Associates (front desk staff)
    1. Draft talking points about exhibitions and programs for Museum Associates
    1. Create monthly front desk schedule
    1. Manage poster distribution with the Visitor Services team and volunteers
  3. Facilities & Rentals
    1. Act as a liaison between SUMA and SUU Central Scheduling, Guest Services, Facilities Management, SUU Lock Shop and food service providers for both SUMA and non-SUMA events
    1. Field all facility rental requests with prompt response
    1. Responsible for interdepartmental transfers related to events
    1. Ensure classroom, gallery, and plaza are set-up and torn down for all events on calendar including internal meetings, facility rentals, and events
    1. Distribute facility calendar to visitor services team and team leads bi-weekly
  4. SUMA Events Calendar
    1. Manage the museum’s internal and external master calendars which include: museum-sponsored programs, educational tours and classroom visits, audience engagement events, facility rentals, exhibitions, and marketing information
    1. Manage seasonal planning meetings with all departments
    1. Communicate and enforce deadlines to all event planners
    1. Collect and organize all event description information
  5. Interns & Volunteers
    1. Manage the museum’s volunteer program through recruitment, training, and retention efforts through recognition and rewards
    1. Create and maintain a robust internship program for SUMA that will benefit SUU students needing internship hours for credit
      1. Oversee application process and internship placement
      1. Conduct onboarding and regular check-ins with intern and supervisor
      1. Act as a liaison with any academic departments

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required (Museum Studies, Arts Administration, Business is preferred)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a senior leadership position or one with a similar scope
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; and the ability to communicate effectively in speaking to both individuals and groups is required
  • Proven organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to work across departments and with colleagues, trustees, volunteers, and community leaders
  • Ability to maintain a positive, calm disposition in an ever-changing environment and during demanding times
  • Experience with facility operations in comparable institutions such as museums, performing arts, other cultural institutions or other similar type institutions is preferred
