Summary:

The University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) seeks an Associate Director of Development, Institutional Giving to oversee a broad portfolio of institutional donors and a comprehensive solicitation program for private and corporate foundations; federal, state, and local government agencies; University of Michigan units; and other prospects as assigned. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this is a hybrid role that requires 1-3 days of onsite work per week at UMMA, located at 525 S State St, Ann Arbor, MI 48108.

Responsibilities: 

  • Research, identify, and lead engagement efforts for prospective and existing foundations, corporations, government agencies, U-M unit funders, and other development prospects. 
  • Author letters, proposals, and budgets to solicit gifts from foundations, government agencies, U-M units, and other prospects as assigned/needed.
  • Draft proposals, letters, emails, and other solicitations to secure project, exhibition, and operating support from on-campus partners, including schools, colleagues, and units; research and teaching awards; sponsorship opportunities; and U-M grant programs.
  • Organize and monitor grant activity and is the primary liaison to the Office of the Vice President for Research and Office of University Development Corporate and Foundation Relations.   
  • Contribute to the development of overall stewardship strategies, including writing acknowledgment letters, progress reports, and financial reports. 
  • Advance UMMA’s visibility in the philanthropic sector and work with the OUD Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations to connect with national and international foundations and U-M Government Relations to develop relationships with U.S. and international policymakers and government funding agencies.
  • Meet funding goals including the support of ongoing exhibitions and programs and significant major grant activity that contributes to achieving UMMA’s forthcoming campaign goal. 
  • Participate in meetings with UMMA and U-M faculty and staff to match funding needs to potential funding sources. 
  • Edit proposals, solicitations, and stewardship materials by other Development team members. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5 to 7 years of previous experience in grant writing, communications, or a related field. 
  • A background in the visual arts or the cultural community or higher education. 
  • Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising. Ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle: (1) to initiate contacts with potential funders; (2) to develop appropriate cultivation strategies for funders, including working with volunteers and senior University administrators; (3) to move potential funders in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure; (4) to maintain stewardship contacts with funders. 
  • Superior oral, written, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to marshal complex arguments and present them in a clear and engaging manner. 
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct foundation/government fundraising in a team environment,  including cultivating and soliciting prospects capable of five- to six-figure gifts. 
  • Proven track record of adhering to timelines and meeting deadlines. 
  • Proven problem-solving, research, and analytical skills.
