The Educator for Academic Engagement and Access at the Palmer Museum of Art works with the Director of Education as a key member of the education department with a focus on connecting Penn State students and faculty to the collections, exhibitions, experiences, and resources of the Palmer Museum of Art. The Educator for Academic Engagement and Access develops museum-based programs and resources to support collaborations and partnerships across diverse academic disciplines and to engage a growing student audience. The academic focus of this position enhances the museum’s stewardship of the University’s land grant mission by developing academic knowledge and extending it to public and K-12 audiences.

Specifically, the Educator for Academic Engagement and Access is charged with integrating the Palmer Museum into the University curriculum and academic environment and developing opportunities for engagement and interpretation in the galleries and across virtual and digital platforms. Reporting to and working closely with the Director of Education, they collaborate with faculty, students, curators, and guest scholars to develop and present new research and interpretive approaches to the campus community in impactful and meaningful ways.

The Educator of Academic Engagement and Access plays a key role in shaping pedagogy for object-based learning and curricula-based engagement. They cultivate partnerships with and serve as a principal liaison to colleges and units across the University, to individual faculty members, and organize public programs that bring research on the Museum’s expansive collection and exhibitions to diverse and underserved audiences.

This position will:

  • Coordinate and develop exhibitions and programs in museum spaces, including the planning for the new museum facility, which includes a Teaching Gallery and Object Study Room, and other spaces for use by classes and other university colleges/departments.
  • Participate in creating and managing educational resources designed to enhance faculty connection with the Palmer Museum and its collections and exhibitions.
  • Initiate collaborations with faculty to develop individual teaching opportunities with the museum’s collection, such as tours, talks, study room exploration, and special exhibitions.
  • Develop audience-centered, participatory programs for students.
  • Create gallery experiences and educational opportunities to connect the museum’s collection and exhibitions with curriculum in a wide variety of academic disciplines.
  • Plan and coordinate student-centered programs such as Art After Hours.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Education to develop faculty and K-12 teacher workshops/institutes in partnership with Penn State’s School of Visual Arts, College of Education, and other academic units.
  • Coordinate the museum’s undergraduate internship program and student volunteer program and serve as a professional mentor for participants.
  • Assist with training and mentoring of museum volunteers, graduate assistants, and visitor services staff to ensure the success of academic engagement programs and activities.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in art history, art education, museum studies, education or related field and 3-5 years of experience in museum education and program coordination is required.

SALARY BAND:

H (STFF)-$34,188 – $70,080
