HASKELL CURATOR OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART

PRINCETON UNIVERSITY ART MUSEUM

The Princeton University Art Museum seeks to appoint a visionary and productive curator as its Haskell Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art to this important endowed position. One of a team of 11 curators within a Museum of 85 staff and an operating budget of approximately $16 million, the Haskell Curator is charged with shepherding the Museum’s collecting and exhibiting activities in art after 1945.

The Museum seeks an experienced person with the ability to formulate and advance a vision for a university museum with an established commitment to modern and contemporary art as a core component of its program.  Reporting to the Associate Director for Collections and Exhibitions, and in close coordination with the Director, the Curator will be an intellectual authority on, and will assume a full range of curatorial responsibilities for, the Museum’s globe-spanning activities in art after 1945. The Haskell Curator will craft an ambitious program of temporary exhibitions, research, and scholarly publications and will work closely with faculty and students to foster significant and sustained curricular and scholarly engagement with the collections.

Working within a team environment, and supervising project-based research assistant and student interns, the Haskell Curator will promote dialogue, engagement, and collaboration both within the Museum and beyond, serving as an important public intellectual voice in the fields of global modern and contemporary art. The Curator will be able to grow the collections significantly by recommending works for purchase and cultivating and working closely with collectors, especially Princeton alumni around the world. The Haskell Curator will also play an active role in cultivating a corpus of benefactors and collectors with a passion for modern and contemporary art, including individuals, foundations, federal agencies, and other sources.
