Assistant Educator, School and Teacher Programs
Job Summary:
Supports the management of the school visits program by teaching, developing lessons and programming, contributing to outreach efforts, and coordinating the day-to-day operations of K-12 visits for schools and teachers, as directed by the Director of School and Teacher Programs.
Essential Functions/Duties:
- Within the guidelines, best practices and pedagogy outlined by the Director of School and Teacher Programs, develop and teach guided visits for K-12 students at the museum and in schools.
- Create new object-based lessons, and use or build on existing lesson plans, programs, and gallery interpretations for K-12 audiences. Recommend changes aligned to curricular, social emotional, and practical considerations and priorities
- Maintain and use systems for collecting, organizing and sharing lesson plans and program materials for use by educators and docents facilitating guided visits and school partnerships.
- Schedule, supervise and lead the daily work of Museum Educator and on-call educators for in their typical tasks and activities.
- Assist with onboarding and training of Museum Educators, on-call educators, student fellows, and volunteer docents by providing best practices and content, by guiding and mentoring, as overseen by and in coordination with the Director.
- Provides input on job performance and hiring decisions to the Director.
- Build on and expand existing K-12 outreach and school participation in the school visits program and in school partnerships in consultation with the Director.
- Coordinate and manage current multi-session school partnerships and support the development of new school relationships and partnerships.
- Attend planning meetings with the Director.
- Coordinate visit details, logistics and content. Work collaboratively with school partners to reflect on and assess programs and impacts and make appropriate changes to partnership goals and curriculum.
- Work with the Museum Educator to develop content and teach Providence-based school partnerships.
- Coordinate with Visitor Services regarding guided visits to answer questions related to curricular, interpretive and practical matters.
- Maintain timely oversight of lesson plans submitted by docents for one-part guided visits to assure curricular goals and smooth logistics.
- Coordinate with a variety of museum staff in various departments to initiate and support administrative tasks related to school visits programs, including photography permissions, transportation funding and reimbursements, post-visit surveys, data gathering and dissemination, photography and graphic design for curricular, programmatic and marketing purposes.
Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in art history, art education or related field.
- Minimum of three years of museum or gallery interpretation or related experience in professional settings with strong teaching abilities.
- Collaborative approach with strong interpersonal skills and oral and written communication developed in relevant positions.
- Prior experience supervising, mentoring and coordinating projects and people.
- Organizational skills to balance multiple priorities and tasks.
- Ability to build relationships and prioritize outreach and advocate internally and externally with K-12 constituents; ability to work effectively both independently and cooperatively in a team setting.
- Ability to stay abreast of current museum programming trends in school-based programs.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in art history, art education or related field preferred.
- Computer and software skills required with experience with database systems preferred.
