Description:
This position manages the day-to-day operations of Visitor Services for the American University Museum, including the Museum Volunteer Program and the Museum Shop. Given that this position oversees the volunteer program, a successful candidate will feel comfortable and relate well to diverse populations of all ages, as well as, exhibit cultural sensitivity and people-skills; especially good listening and both written and oral communication skills. They will also have proven ability to create new programs and build capacity through community engagement and partnership development. The position also ensures general operational support for the Museum including the coordination of all financial transactions and hiring and training personnel for the Museum Retail Shop. Therefore, candidates should have experience with retail operations, pricing, and inventory management and general operational knowledge of museums and/or non-profit arts programs.
Educational Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree is required.
Minimum Requirements:
  • At least three years of relevant experience, or the equivalent in training and experience
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Candidate should possess excellent computer skills including spreadsheet, database programs, and advanced word-processing skills
  • Interpersonal and written communication skills are very important
Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience with a point of sale system (POS), either as a user or manager, highly desirable
  • Prior experience in museum operations or a gallery shop
Additional Information:
This position works closely with the Katzen Arts Center residents and requires a close and positive working relationship. Weekend and evening hours will be required.
