Museum Post-Doctoral Fellow – Joseph Moore Museum (JMM), Earlham College


The Joseph Moore Museum (JMM) at Earlham College invites applications for a 1-year post-doctoral fellowship in Native American Archaeology and Material Culture. This 12-month contract is for a full-time, grant-funded position with benefits.

The JMM seeks a specialist in Native American material culture of the Midwest to catalog and digitize our extensive legacy Native American collections. Our preference is for someone with a specialization in lithic analysis and the Mississippian period. The post-doc will reanalyze the lithic collections held at the JMM which include surface collected and excavated material primarily from Wayne and surrounding counties of eastern Indiana and Western Ohio. The selected candidate will catalog, analyze, digitize, and rehouse all of the materials in the Native American collection. Inclusive collections care practices are essential to this project. The post-doc will lead efforts to identify and consult tribal representatives. The post-doc will also teach one course in Native American Archaeology of this region for undergraduates at Earlham College with mentoring and support from the college including museum faculty. The selected candidate will work with the Collections Manager to establish a 3D scanning and printing lab for the creation of distributable models of typical lithics from the region. Qualifications:


    * Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology or similar field focused on Native American Archaeology and material culture (MA with appropriate experience may be considered)
    * Experience in 3D imaging and printing of archaeological materials required
    * Experience conducting research with legacy collections required
    * Experience with NAGPRA preferred
    * Experience working with tribal representatives preferred
    * Experience working with and teaching undergraduates preferred but not required
    * Interest in decolonizing museums and inclusive collections practice preferred
