Summary:
The Lawrenceville School’s Stephan Archives seeks an Archival Transcription & Research Intern to assist with the transcription of historical documents located in The Hamill Papers, a collection that encompasses the correspondence of Rev. Samuel McClintock Hamill (1812-1889), the School’s longest serving Head Master (1837-1883).
The intern will assist the School’s Project Archivist with integrating new material into the collection, transcribing select documents, and conducting additional research to augment the scope of the collection in the effort to develop a meaningful digital exhibit using this material. One area of significance within the collection includes correspondence with prominent Cherokee leaders and Cherokee students who attended Lawrenceville.
Candidates must have completed core MLIS courses, courses in archival concepts, or relevant graduate work in history/related fields to be eligible for this position.
The Offer:
Interns will have the opportunity for practical application of archives and library skills, including the chance to work closely with documents of historical significance and to do original research using a collection with untapped potential.
Course credit and letters of recommendation will be provided upon request.
Interns will be supervised by professional librarians and other trained archives staff.
The strongest applicants will have the following qualifications:
- Available for a minimum of 10 hours per week during regular week days
- Experience working in a Library/Archive or completion of core M.L.S. courses. We will also consider graduate students in the fields of History, Public History, or Museum Studies. Familiarity with cataloging, archival processing and data management techniques preferred.
- Skilled in the use of MS Office Suite and/or Google Software in a PC environment and regular office equipment (scanners, photocopiers, etc.)
- Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills; attention to accuracy and detail is essential. Candidates should understand that these transcriptions can often be difficult to read and often require patience and persistence.
- Previous experience transcribing historical documents and conducting research using primary source documents
- Knowledge or interest in Native American history, specifically the history of the Cherokee Nation
- Knowledge or interest in boarding school history
- Familiarity with digital humanities trends and software, such as Omeka
