Salary: $45,000 /yr minimum
Job Summary:
This position provides strategic leadership and planning of Ashfall Fossil Beds in line with the Museum’s mission and strategic goals. The Superintendent will be responsible for overseeing the onsite supervision and management of Ashfall Fossil Beds. The position will be responsible for supervising and carrying out various tasks involved in operating the site, such as, building and trail maintenance, housekeeping, equipment maintenance, special events, gift shop operations, emergency response, and accident prevention.
The position is responsible for assisting in the management and conservation of in-situ fossils and exhibits. In addition to overseeing staff, the position will also hire, train, and supervise seasonal workforce. The superintendent is also responsible for overseeing the delivery of public programs and onsite delivery of education.
The Superintendent contributes to effective communication and coordination among museum departments, which is central to the Museum’s success. As one of the most public faces of the museum, it is essential that the person in this role has excellent communication and customer service skills. The Superintendent should be well-organized and be able to build and maintain solid relationships with visitors, donors, members, partner organizations, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in park/recreation management or a related field (wildlife, business administration, natural resources sciences, public administration, history, cultural resource preservation or interpretation, travel and tourism) and 2 years experience with overseeing operations at a public facing location, including the maintenance of buildings and trails; equivalent education/experience considered. Must be able to provide leadership and staff supervision. Strong customer service skills are essential. Experience managing large budgets. Competency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and spreadsheet entry/management. Knowledge of best practices for customer service and demonstrated experience working with diverse populations. Excellent interpersonal skills. Experience using tools and equipment to maintain the site. Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in geology or biology. Knowledge and experience in the conservation of fossils and/or in-situ specimens. Knowledge of museum trends and demonstrated ability to manage students in a museum, science center, zoo or aquarium environment (or similar non-profit institution). Knowledge of retail operations in a museum/non-profit.
