The Warren and Margot Coville Photography Intern will:

  • Work with the Curator of Photography and New Media to research objects in The Ringling’s photography collection in order to update or correct catalog records
  • Assist in research and create bibliographies and summary reports on selected artists and/or photographs, locate applicable resources onsite in the Ringling Museum Art Library or identify potential loans from other institutions
  • Assist Curator in weekly survey in the paper storage vault onsite in order to view, assess, and research photographs
  • Assist in the planning and research for upcoming exhibitions

Skills important for success:

  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Acrobat
  • Skill in online and library-based research
  • Ability to take direction and work independently

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop art history research skills 
  • Gain a better understanding of the history of photography 
  • Understand best practices for safe handling, care, and storage of photographic objects 
  • Develop skills in curatorship within a professional museum environment 

Length of Internship

  • The internship will be during the Spring 2025 semester.
  • The start date is flexible beginning in January/February 2025 ending May 2025 (Maximum of 16 weeks).

Qualifications

  • Applicant must be a currently enrolled in an undergraduate program
  • Ability to lift boxes or books up to 15lbs.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience compiling bibliographies in Chicago or MLA style
  • Students majoring or minoring in art, art history, or the humanities, especially with interest in photography or the history of photography

Considerations

  • Rate of Pay: $15 per hour 
  • Working Hours: 8-10 hours per week; weekdays; with a flexible schedule.  Please note this will be an in-person internship experience, not remote.
  • This position is based in Sarasota, FL.
